The new audio guide: 20 stops to listen to

Soon a voice on your own phone will take you through Cheese World: 20 stops, four languages and a separate version for children. We are right in the middle of it – the 360-degree tour and six short listens are already online.

Anyone walking through Cheese World should not only see what happens there, but hear it as well. The audio guide is being made right now – one stop at a time.

What to expect

20 stops
from the beginnings of the dairy to the ripening cellar
Four languages
German, Italian, English and Arabic
A version for children
shorter texts and small hands-on parts
On your own phone
scan the QR code at the stop and listen, headphones are enough
Already online

Why we are doing it

A lit column in front of the Three Peaks panorama in the exhibition room
Stops like this one will carry a QR code.

There have been two ways so far: the public tours in season – every Tuesday and Thursday without booking, in German at 10:00 and in Italian at 11:00, with no minimum number – and the tour on request for groups of 15 people and more. At the moment the fixed dates are resting. Anyone who comes on a day with no public tour and no booked group walks through the viewing area with nobody telling the story. That is exactly the gap the audio guide closes: you set the pace, stop where it interests you and move on when you have heard enough.

What you will hear

Not what is written on the panels anyway. Instead: why a washed-rind wheel is cared for by hand for weeks, what happens in the ripening cellar during the months when seemingly nothing happens, and where the 35,000 litres of hay milk go that arrive from the Dolomites every day. Short pieces, not lectures.

First the stirring in the vat, then the voice explaining how the cheesemaker knows the curd is ready.

How it will work in the house

At every station there will be a small sign with a QR code. Hold your phone up to it and the page opens in the browser – no app, no sign-up. Headphones are more comfortable but not needed. Anyone who wants to skip a station simply walks on.

The ripening cellar is one of the 20 stops – you will hear how long our wheels rest there, and why.

A separate track for children

The cheese playground – children get their own version to listen to.

Children listen to their own version: shorter texts, simpler words and small tasks along the way. Anyone who has walked through a building with children knows the difference between interesting and too long.

From home as well

Those who cannot come to Toblach can already look inside: the Cheese World page carries a 360-degree tour – drag, turn, follow the markers, from the museum into the production area and on to the ripening cellar. Right below it are six short listens of half a minute each, “From milk to cheese”: from the milk delivery to the vat, the curd, the press and on into the ripening cellar. Small glimpses – the 20 stops of the audio guide will follow.

What we are still working on

Texts, recordings and pictures are being made one after the other, followed by the translations into all four languages. As soon as the audio guide is ready we will say so here – and in the shop.
